Many people believe that using your voice to earn a living must be a really easy job.
This is far from the truth, as voice acting is perhaps one of the most misunderstood occupations. It is not just being able to read aloud (although this is very important.) It is about being able to shape the sound of your voice, being aware of its sound, and interpreting the script as the writer intended. It’s about being able to take direction, how and when to breathe, how to develop and maintain character voices and accents, and how to touch people emotionally with your voice.

Our Voice School has been designed to give an insight into the mysterious world of voice-acting as an industry.
This intensive weekend course will teach the pre-requisites and techniques which will give you the edge when entering the industry.
It also gives those already in the industry a refreshed view of their skills and offers new techniques to improve their performance.

The course is highly practical, with a 1:1 ratio of theory time to practical ‘in-studio’ time. Whenever we learn something in the classroom, we take it straight into the studio to put it into practice. The studio facilities are first-class, with new state of the art equipment.

The Voice School will bring in seasoned industry experts, with years of experience, to teach you what they have learned about the craft over the years;

Andie Spargo – Character voicing and accents.
Andie has many years experience in acting. He has also worked in television, radio and commercials.
He has performed successfully in live comedy shows and brings all of this experience to his voice acting productions for The Voice Booth.
Richard Green – General speech, breathing, and relaxation.
Richard has a wealth of experience in radio. He has worked for many years as a presenter, a voice-artist, and all round radio performer. He is currently a senior tutor at the Canterbury School of Broadcasting, with specialist knowledge in speech and pronunciation.
Dave Dunlay – What clients look for and how to get work.
Dave has extensive international experience in voice production with over twenty four years working behind a microphone in radio and television in New Zealand and Australia. He has been the voice for many major companies including Pak n Save, Touch NZ, and NZ cricket, and brings his huge experience to The Voice School.
Ron Rodger – Voice acting, radio drama.
Ron learnt radio drama & book reading from old hands at ABC Radio after graduating from drama school in Sydney [NIDA]. He has created hundreds of radio and TV voiceovers, dramas and documentary narration texts. Ron is very capable with both character and straight reads and has a repertoire of authentic voices underscored by a broad emotional range.
Deb Stanoway – Script interpretation.
As well as being the corporate voice  for Michael Hill for NZ and Australia, Woman's Day, and countless other brands, Deb was also the primary newsreader on the More FM network until 2 years ago. She is an expert in voice delivery and will share her script interpretation skills with you on this course.
Toby Ricketts – Studio etiquette and professionalism.
Toby has been employed in the New Zealand radio industry since 1999, producing audio for radio and TV commercials and documentaries, and business presentations. Toby has also taught seminars in audio recording, and has tutored in computer editing, recording and sound design at the CPIT New Zealand Broadcasting School, and has also taught audio production at the Canterbury School of Media.
In 2004 Toby won the top award for sound design at the national New Zealand radio awards, cementing his place as one of the leading audio engineers in the country

Curriculum:

•    You will meet creative commercial writers who will explain the different types of scripts that can be written and why they need to be read in a particular style.

•    Learn about microphone techniques from a professional studio engineer. He will also provide answers to questions on studio etiquette and how to pace the "read" to the required time.

•    Review voices and commercials from around the world. Why are great commercials great? Usually, it’s the voice artist who ‘makes’ an ad.

•    Listen to guest professional voice actors discussing accents, character voices and pronunciation, including Maori.

•    Look at ways of staying healthy and keeping your voice strong.
You'll receive exercises to improve your speech and to limber
up before any recording job.

•    Throughout the duration of the course you will be working in the world-class recording studios of The Voice Booth. The classes will be limited to only five people to maximize your time in the studio.

•    Upon successful completion you'll receive a sample CD
of your recorded work.

This Voice Over School can not guarantee that you will succeed as a full time voice actor, but you will learn basic skills
that will assist you in getting your foot in the door.
It is hard work, but for those who do become successful the rewards are there.
