Mastering
Mastering is an essential step in the music production process that is often misunderstood or even forgotten about. So what exactly is mastering? Mastering is the application of any processing (most commonly EQ and Compression) over the final stereo mix. This is the final step in creating a professional sounding mix that will compete with other commercial recordings. Mastering will increase your mix's RMS volume, that is basically the average volume, which increaeses the percieved LOUDNESS. This is the reason some songs from certain albums on your MP3 player sound louder than other songs played at the same level - they have been mastered harder. But mastering doesn't just increase the volume of your mix, it is also used to smooth out the frequency spectrum, reducing resonant areas or enhancing underfed zones.
Take a listen to these samples. They have both been normalised to 0dB, so have the same peak volume.
Sam Blakelock - Sing Along Song UNMASTERED
Sam Blakelock - Sing Along Song MASTERED
In mastering this recording by local singer songwriter Sam Blakelock, we have increased the RMS or percieved loudness of the mix, as well as enhancing some of the highs to give it more 'sparkle' and lows to give a bit more 'ooomph'.
We can master your existing recordings quickly and affordably or put the finishing touches on anything you may record with us at the studio.
We charge $200 per song, or can do multiple tracks or albums for a negotiated rate.
We can capture your live gig with our portable Hard Disk recording equipment that enables us to record up to 24 tracks individually. No more weird sounding stereo desk mixes! Each individual microphone and instrument can be recorded, then taken back to our studio for mixing and mastering. Take a listen to some of the examples below, A Flight To Blackout and Bang!Bang!Eche! recorded at the 2007 RounDUp band competition, live at the Dux de Lux in Christchurch, NZ, and Hera recorded for her Album 'Hera Live at Al's'
